The Gift of Sound… and Silence

The Gift of Sound… and Silence

One large room with twelve treatment spaces full of patients can get slightly disruptive, with beeps, dings, loud chatter and nerves!

For the patients who regularly receive care in the chemotherapy and infusion room at Sechelt | shíshálh Hospital, having a personal TV available to focus on in this busy space is a very welcome thing indeed. Being able to actually hear that TV, or alternatively, being able to find some quiet and inner calm is another matter.

Thanks to one patient’s voice, Sechelt Hospital Foundation was alerted to the need for greater patient comfort in this space, and able to respond quickly with a solution. Eight noise-reduction headsets are now available to patients to either tune into their own TV or find that quiet space to support healing. These headsets are available by request and sanitized between each use.

“Many people here are quite sick, and there is a lot of competition for noise,” said Autumn Dykstra, the patient whose request made this happen. “With these headphones, I think patients will be able to hear their own TVs better, and the surrounding room will be much quieter. I think it will lead to patients feeling less anxious and support better healing and calm while receiving treatments.

While it is a small item in the grand scheme of things, it makes a big difference to patient comfort and healing, all made possible thanks to our generous community of donors.
