17 Jun Gift Inspired by Other Donors
Jane McOuat Farrer, together with her personal doctor, Dr. Joerg Jaschinski, and her friend, Dr. Ron Mundy, honoured her late husband’s memory at a moving, safely distanced meeting, at the Sechelt Hospital Foundation offices.
Jane donated a significant gift to be dedicated to supporting “what the community needs”: expanded surgical services for procedures close to home and a new building for Mental Health and Substance Use services for the Sunshine Coast. Her late husband, Dr. John Farrer, was a passionate supporter of Surgery and Mental Health services for the Sunshine Coast. John was well known and loved by many patients, staff and loyal neighbours and friends in Pender Harbour.
“I was inspired by a story at the holidays which shared the story of a grateful patient who asked her doctor ‘What do you need?’ The gift for a piece of equipment for our Emergency Department moved me to want to do the same, to honour John,” remarked McOuat Farrer.
“I hope my gift dedicated to John’s memory will inspire others to step forward to help our local health services, as many of the procedures or services we need are no longer funded by the government. It is up to us to help support and build the kind of health care we want for our community. If everyone gave what they could afford, why not do it while you are still alive to see the results and ripple effect of good? John left us too soon …. and I want to keep his memory alive by doing what he would want done: help deliver what our community needs to thrive.”
The gathering was more than a cheque presentation. Memories of John were exchanged, remarking on his decency, compassion, commitment, and willingness to help others, not only patients but his fellow health care providers as well.
